An eviction notice has been served on a group of travellers who have moved onto land in Peterborough owned by the East of England showground.

Local councillor Julie Stevenson revealed this afternoon that an enforcement notice had been secured on behalf of the landowner which requires the travellers to leave by 5pm today.

“In case they have not left by 5pm an eviction will be initiated tomorrow morning,” she said.

“Repairs to the fencing will then be made.”

The travellers moved in on Monday and efforts to force them to leave began by the new operator of Peterborough’s showground.

Asset Earned Power Group (AEPG) have ambitious plans for the showground, including a 50-acre leisure hub.

They also plan a huge housing programme, but the level of interruption caused by the small influx of caravans is not known.

Rapid enforcement is under way with applications for High Court action to remove them already under way.

The travellers are thought to have accessed the land through a fence.

The unauthorised encampment is on Joseph Odam Way opposite the Harvester.
