Only weeks after being released a prolific Cambridge bike and shop thief has been sent back to prison.

Sonny Matthews, 33, of no fixed address, was arrested in Cambridge on Thursday (7 September) for a string of offences including shop theft, bike theft and breaching a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).

The offences saw him steal goods including wine, whiskey, vodka and scratch cards between 29 August and 7 September from shops including the Co-ops and Tesco.

At Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Friday (8 September) Matthews, pleaded guilty to five counts of shoplifting, six breaches of a CBO and a bike theft which took place on 9 February.

He was sentenced to a year in prison.

His CBO, which remains in place until October 2024, states he must not:

Enter any Tesco, Co-op, or Sainsbury’s within the boundaries of the M11, A14 or A11 in Cambridge.

Enter John Lewis in Cambridge

Not to enter any shop in possession of a rucksack within the boundaries of the M11, A14 or A11 in Cambridge.

PC Kyle Marsden, who investigated, said: “Matthews is a prolific thief, who despite only being released from prison a few weeks ago, has continued to commit crime across the city.

“Thanks to the persistence of officers, he has been put before the courts again and sentenced. We hope this provides some respite to those at the receiving end of his offending.”
