A man who ignored a road closure while drink driving has been disqualified. Dominik Matysiak, 44, of Cherry Drive, Ely, drove through road closure signs on the B1043 between Godmanchester and Offord Cluny on Friday afternoon (8 December).

He reached a marked police car and asked officers to let him through the closure. When they refused he got stuck in a ditch while attempting a three-point turn.

Officers at the scene spoke to him again and smelt alcohol on his breath.

Matysiak blew 78 at the roadside, more than three times the legal limit of 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath.

He was arrested and in custody provided a reading of 67.

At Huntingdon Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (9 December), Matysiak pleaded guilty to drink driving and was disqualified from driving for 19 months. He was also fined £120.

PC Colin Dyer, who investigated, said: “Matysiak not only brazenly ignored a road closure and drove right up to a police officer but also broke the law by drink driving.

“Driving is not a right but a privilege that is afforded to those eligible. If it is abused then, like in this case, it will be removed.

“There is no excuse for drink driving. By getting behind the wheel, you are putting yourself and others at risk.”

The force operates a dedicated, confidential hotline, 0800 032 0845, which is available 24/7 and provides the public with the chance to provide information about anyone they think may be driving under the influence.
