Cambridge surgeons praised for efforts in trying to save attacked man’s life

Addenbrooke’s neurosciences critical care unit (NCCU) treats 900 patients a year

The family of a man who died after being attacked outside a block of flats have paid tribute to surgeons at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, who had fought to save his life.

In a tribute issued by the family of Nigel Mazs special mention is made of the neurosciences critical care unit (NCCU) at Addenbrooke’s which treats more than 900 patients each year, around 100 of which are admitted with severe head injuries.

“As a family we would like to thank the neuroscience team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital for all the amazing work they did with dad,” the family said in their tribute.

Mr Mazs, 59, died on January 4 died following an assault which took place on Friday 22 December 2023 in Malakoff Close, Great Yarmouth.

“Dad was loved by so many people; he made a positive impact in everyone’s life with his infectious laugh. “He was an amazing father, grandfather, and brother,” said his family.

The family tribute was issued following the opening of an inquest yesterday (January 11).

Police said Mr Mazs was targeted inside a communal area of a block of flats on Malakoff Close.

He was treated on Regent Road by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

Mr Mazs was treated initially at the James Paget Hospital at Gorleston before being transferred to Addenbrooke’s.

A man is in custody charged with grievous bodily harm.
