A new car park at Huntingdon station which was built by National Highways creating an extra level to the west side car park, may finally get the green light to open.

National Highways built the extra level as part of ambitious proposals to create a transport hub at Huntingdon following completion of the A14 upgrade.

But for months the new car parking has been closed off with no indication of when it would open.

However National Highways today offered a realistic prospect of it opening shortly.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “We are expecting to handover the car park to Network Rail and Govia Thameslink Railway in the next few weeks.

“It will then be for the train operators to make a decision of when to open the car park for public use.”

The spokesperson added: “One of the issues was a third party and their work to upgrade a power line that contributed to the delay.

“We apologise for the impact this has caused.”

National Highways had previously promised work at the station would “breathe new life into this part of Huntingdon for road, rail users, visitors to the town and town centre.”
