Built in 1332 – mainly for pedestrians and horse drawn transport – the bridge between Godmanchester and Huntingdon faces a hefty repair bill after a two-car crash. Luckily both drivers were not hurt but it could be many months before the bridge is full restored.

It is Grade 1 listed – and has been so since 1950.

It even gets a special mention on Tripadvisor where it is rated as the area’s 14th top attraction.

“Great historical bridge,” was how it was described by one recent visitor.

“Focal point in town. Amazing small bridge. Worth the short walk from the river.”

But Policing Huntingdonshire reported the crash which has caused serious damage to the bridge.

“This is the scene that met our response officers on the Old Bridge between Huntingdon and Godmanchester,” said police after attending the crash.

“Local firefighters, ambulance crews and police officers attended the two car RTC and managed to ensure that the two drivers were safely removed from the vehicles.

“Thankfully, there were no major injuries. Local council teams also helped to ensure the appropriate roads were closed in good time.”

Police added: “However unfortunately, the 14th Century bridge has not escaped unharmed.

“Damage assessments will be conducted by local partner authorities as soon as possible.

“The bridge currently remains closed to all traffic.”

The medieval stone bridge over the River Great Ouse has a long and chequered history.

The 14th century bridge was a replacement for an earlier one that was finally declared dangerous.
