A major road through Cambridgeshire could shortly close after a village ‘flood watchdog’ group warned of possible barriers and closures. At 3pm today the Facebook group ‘Welney Flood Alert’ posted to say they had been advised that the Environment Agency is set to issue a flood alert for Welney Wash Road.

The group says both Norfolk County Council and Cambridgeshire County Council highways department are being notified.

“We can expect barriers across and diversions in place later today,” says a group spokesperson.

“The agency are being cautious as although Sutton Gault upstream is falling water is crossing the road already at Welney and they are concerned of it creeping up overnight.

“Larger ponding in the normal places and the last bend before Welney, depths in those areas around 2 inches but it may go deeper overnight, beware of the high-speed idiots which I have already witnessed so probably best the alert is on.

“Water is flowing over in a couple of places only around half an inch but a fair flow. Drive with care and respect the other users.”

The Facebook group was set up to provide information to interested parties as to the up-to-date position of the flooding of the A1101 road through the village of Welney, Norfolk.

“Whilst best endeavours are made to be as accurate as possible, the team accept no responsibility for any liability or damage caused as a result of the information provided,” says the group, which is run entirely by volunteers.
