A new roundabout to help people’s journeys along the A1307 is now open in all directions after work was completed ahead of schedule. The Greater Cambridge Partnership began work on the new Bartlow Road roundabout and crossing in May 2023 and the crews finished on 8 February – two months early.

The roundabout was constructed in four phases to minimise disruption and, along with junction improvements at Dean Crossroads, has been delivered as part of phase one of the Cambridge South East Transport (CSET) scheme to enhance road safety and improve bus, walking and cycling links between Cambridge and Haverhill.

Cllr Elisa Meschini, chair of the GCP’s Executive Board, said: “Thanks to the hard work of all those involved, we can open the new Bartlow Road roundabout two months earlier than originally planned.

This is fantastic news for all those people who travel along the A1307, as well as those who are coming to and from the villages of Linton and Bartlow.

Everyone who uses this stretch of road knows it is a recognised collision site, so to know we have been able to make it significantly safer and easier for people to use is really positive.

“The roundabout and upgrades at Dean Crossroads are the latest in a range of improvements we have been making as part of our Cambridge South East Transport project to make things better for people who travel along this key route in and out of the city and to places like the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

“Our work is not yet done – there are further safety improvements targeting known collision spots along the A1307 due to be completed over the coming months. This all part of our aim to give people more options in how they travel around Greater Cambridge.”

The GCP has completed a series of upgrades along the A1307 as part of phase 1 of the CSET project over the last two years, including:

  • The expansion of the Babraham Road Park & Ride with 152 additional parking spaces.
  • A new signalised crossing at Hildersham which links into the Linton Greenway and the introduction of a reduced 40mph speed limit to improve safety for all users.
  • Improved junctions, signals and street lighting at Linton Village College and Linton Meadows as part of the Linton Greenway. A new shared path has been created from Hildersham west to Linton Road in Abington.
  • New sections of the Linton Greenway to link Granham’s Road to Addenbrookes’ Hospital and the Babraham Road P&R, and onwards to the Copley Hill Business Park.
  • An eastbound bus lane between Dalehead Foods and Linton Village College to provide faster and more reliable bus journeys.
