Peterborough ‘in lockdown’ claim as travellers head for the city bars

A hotel worker from Peterborough claims the city centre has been forced into a ‘lockdown’ after travellers moved into local car parks.

The worker says Peterborough city centre is “spending a third night on lockdown” after crowds of travellers headed for city centre pubs and bars.

His tweets contain anger over the city which has a Conservative run council and a Conservative police and crime commissioner but he says little has been done to quell the situation.

The man has also tweeted about pubs having to “lock their doors” and he claims staff at one city pub have been “terrorised” after an influx of travellers into the bar.

Parts of Peterborough have been taken over by travellers who are moving from location to location.

Last week bailiffs helped to assist in the removal of travellers who had moved into the overflow car park at the Cresset.

And tonight, for the third night running, police have been out in force in the city centre after some of the travellers enjoyed a night on the town.

Eye witnesses have described some pubs closing early whilst one city centre pub were struggling to deal with a large number of travellers who had brought their own drink into the bar.

Cambridgeshire Police are out in force in the city centre.

CambsNews has been filming in the city centre and our short video shows the large police presence.

This was how one person saw it last night on Twitter:

Today we found travellers had moved onto the car park at Stewart House, a building used by a property company to house growing, new businesses.

Others have moved onto a city centre car park.

Some bars and clubs are reported to have closed their doors early over the weekend.

Posts on social media include one from last night that said, “Peterborough is in lockdown for a second night as travellers flood the city centre and force businesses to close their doors.”

Another spoke of “serious disorder” but said police appeared to have the situation under control.
