A drunk driver crashed his car, set off an emergency call button that alerted the RAC monitoring centre and when police arrived he triggered another ‘alarm’ by being three times over the legal limit. He has been disqualified from driving for two years.

David Atkin, 61, of Brockley Road, Elsworth, South Cambridgeshire, alerted RAC Monitoring Centre who suspected he had been drink driving.

Police found Atkin sat in the driver’s seat of his silver Citroen in a layby in Madingley Road, Cambridge, on the evening of 10 June.

He admitted to officers immediately that he had been ‘drunk driving’ and blew 108 at the roadside, more than three time the legal limit of 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath.

He went on to give an evidential reading of 216 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood in custody.

At Cambridge magistrates’ court on Thursday (14 December), Atkin pleaded guilty to drink driving and was disqualified from driving for two years and given a 12-month Community Order.

He must also complete 60 hours of unpaid work.

PC Warmuz, who investigated, said: “There is absolutely no excuse for drink driving. Atkin was considerably over the limit, and it was lucky he didn’t do himself or other road users any serious harm.”

The force operates a dedicated, confidential hotline, 0800 032 0845, which is available 24/7 and provides the public with the chance to provide information about anyone they think may be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
