A 54-year-old drunk slumped over the wheel and a 63-year-old woman who was over the limit and crashed into a lamp post were among four drink drive arrests in Fenland.

“Over the weekend, we stopped four people for driving while over the legal limit. The legal alcohol limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath,” a police spokesperson said.

On Saturday evening, police say they were contacted by paramedics who had found a driver slumped behind the wheel in High Road, Wisbech St Mary.

“The driver, a 54-year-old man, was believed to be over the legal limit, so we attempted to breathalyse him, but he failed to provide a breath sample,” said the spokesperson.

Meanwhile, over in Chatteris were called to deal with a vehicle that had crashed into a lamppost on East Park Street.

“The driver of the vehicle, a 63-year-old woman, was uncooperative with officers,” said the spokesperson.

“She refused to provide a breath sample and kicked a female officer.

“She eventually provided a positive breath sample of 67.

“Both drivers were arrested and are due to appear in court on 21 October.”

The following evening, police were back in New Road, Chatteris, when they came across a vehicle with its engine running.

“The driver, a 38-year-old man, was slumped over the steering wheel,” said the spokesperson.

“He was breathalysed and gave a reading of 85. He was arrested for drink driving, and further checks also revealed that the man was also disqualified from driving.”

“We were then called to road traffic collision in Station Road, Wisbech.

“We breathalysed the driver, a 44-year-old man, and he gave a reading of 67. But that was not all, as we also found he was driving without a valid licence, nor valid insurance.

“Again, both drivers were arrested and are due to appear in court on 7 October.”

The spokesperson said: “All four of these drivers were involved in completely different incidents, but they all ended up being arrested and with a court appearance looming.

“Alcohol affects everyone differently and any amount can impair your ability to drive. The only safe option is to avoid alcohol completely if you are driving as even ‘just one drink’ could put you over the limit.”
