A trace of Legionella been found at Central Park paddling pool, Peterborough, and forced its temporary closure.

“We regret to inform residents that a routine test on Central Park paddling pool has found a trace of Legionella,” said a spokesperson for Peterborough City Council.

“We are awaiting further information on what strain of Legionella this is and have taken the precautionary decision to close the facility with immediate effect.

“It is important to note that we have not been notified of anyone with confirmed or suspected Legionellosis linked to this venue.”

Specialist contractors have carried out the required chemical flushing of the entire system and further testing has taken place at the Park Crescent pool.

The city council says that when testing for water borne bacteria, the sample must be given at least 10 days to grow in a laboratory.

“This means the paddling pool will be closed until further notice,” said the spokesperson.

“We are working with our environmental health team to ensure that the safety of the public is paramount as a precaution and will provide regular updates.

“We understand that this is disappointing and frustrating, particularly as it has occurred during the summer holidays, however, the safety of the public is always our primary concern.

“We will re-open the paddling pool as soon as we are able to.”

The spokesperson explained that water borne bacteria can be common in swimming pools and other similar water-based settings “which is why facilities such as ours have rigorous testing policies in place.

“Not all water borne bacteria causes harm which is why further testing is required to rule out all strains of bacteria to ensure we can open safely with confidence.

“As such the closure is a precaution only at this stage.”
