A machete was found in a bush in Peterborough today after a member of the public alerted police.

“Just before 2pm this afternoon, we received a call into our control room after someone came across a machete in a bush in Peterborough,” said a police spokesperson.

“Our response officers headed out to the area and found the weapon, which then prompted the local neighbourhood team to head out and do a full ‘weapon sweep’ of the area.

“Which is when they found a kitchen knife stashed near to where the machete was found.”

The spokesperson added: “We’ve joined our policing colleagues across the country for a week-long period of intensification to tackle personal robbery, which is a significant contributor to violent crime across the UK.

“Our Acquisitive Crime Teams (ACTs) are being supported by our Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs) to focus their activity in known hot-spot areas, increasing our visibility and operational activity and arresting those on intent on committing crime.”

The spokesperson added: “We can’t ever be sure what these weapons were intended to be used for, but we know sadly they are often in the hands of violent offenders who are intent on harming others.

“Anyone can become a victim of robbery, so please make sure you do all you can to protect yourself, but please remember, if you’re threatened with violence, don’t risk your personal safety. Property can be replaced, you can’t.

“While we continue to work hard to stop this, we cannot do it alone – we need your help, and your information.”

Police say if anyone has information or concerns about weapons, they can report it via the police website or call them on 101. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers, anonymously.

Advice about personal safety, including robbery, can be found on the dedicated personal safety information pages on the Cambridgeshire police website here https://orlo.uk/personal_safety_WWG9x
