Start thinking about building a raft now says Ely Rotary Clubs

The message is: If you are a business or a charity– build a raft or get a stall at Aquafest

If it continues to rain much more an ark might be handy but Ely Rotary Clubs have more modest ambitions – to get the city building rafts. These are needed for the annual raft race at Ely Aquafest on July 7.

“We welcome inexperienced and experienced raft builders,” said a spokesperson for the Aquafest committee.

“It’s a timed race and it is a lot of fun. You do get wet, but you can win trophies.

“We can provide buoyancy aids (for the crew} and paddles if needed.”

The committee says they are looking for participants from any organisation.

“So, if you’re a pub, a sports club, a knitting circle, a church, a school, any organisation or a group of friends, now’s the time to get an entry form and start building,” said the spokesperson.

The Rotary Clubs of Ely, who run Aquafest, are also looking for knowledgeable raft builders.

If you have some experience and skills in building craft that can float on water, now is your chance. The club is hoping that a group of enthusiasts may be set up to help newcomers in the task.

The rafts can be made of anything, from two empty barrels and a couple of planks to sophisticated replicas of Ely Cathedral, for example.

The message is: If you are a business or a charity– build a raft or get a stall at Aquafest.
